We homeschool and my child doesn’t have a traditional school grade. How does that work?
If you homeschool and your child is not in traditional grades, Cub Scout advancement is based on age, not grade level. The BSA defines each rank by the child’s age, not their school year.
Age-based rank requirements:
- Lion: Kindergarten age (approx. 5 years old)
- Tiger: Completed kindergarten or 6 years old
- Wolf: Completed 1st grade or 7 years old
- Bear: Completed 2nd grade or 8 years old
- Webelos: Completed 3rd grade or 9 years old
- Arrow of Light (AOL): Completed 4th grade or 10 years old
What do Cub Scouts do?
Cub Scouts is a family-oriented program for girls and boys in kindergarten through fifth grade that focuses on fun, outdoor exploration, and character building. Kids take part in activities like camping, hiking, building Pinewood Derby cars, and earning adventure loops alongside their family and friends.
What happens at a Cub Scout meeting?
We DO a LOT of things! As much as possible, we do hands-on events. For example, instead of just talking about first aid, we make a small first aid kit and learn how to tie a square knot (the first aid knot). We talk about camping and work on putting up and taking down a tent. We may work on den activities such as making a den flag. The key is to have fun while we are learning things.
Do Cub Scouts go camping?
Yes, Cub Scouts go camping! The younger Cub scouts may go on 2 – 3 Pack campouts, usually somewhere local. The older Cubs may attend 4-5 campouts, either with the District (our county) or the Council (our local group of Districts, called the Piedmont Council), or with our local Boy Scout Troop (Scouts BSA). Webelos and Arrow of Light members can camp with the troop so long as a parent and a Cub Leaders are present.
How much does Cub Scouts cost?
The cost to join Cub Scouts is set by the National Council of Scouting America. It is currently $85 per year. Families pay for the costs of other events as they arise, such as the food for a campout, or the ticket to a museum.
Do parents have to attend Cub Scout meetings and camping trips?
The amount of parent involvement is set by age. For example, Lions (Kindergartners) and Tigers (1st graders) are REQUIRED to have a parent with them at every meeting. For Wolves, Bears, Webelos, and Arrow of Light (2nd – 5th graders) parents are strongly encourage to pack and den meetings. Since Cub Scout camping is family camping, a parent or legal guardian is required to attend.
Do Cub Scouts have to wear a uniform?
Cub Scouts do not have to wear a uniform, but it is highly encouraged. Wearing a Cub Scout uniform is one of the methods of scouting. It is dual purpose: it demonstrates that the Cub Scout is part of the team and it’s where they can wear the badges that they have earned.
Pack 327 highly encourages purchasing at least the blue scout uniform shirt (or tan for Webelos-age scouts) and a Cub Scout belt. The belt is where the belt loops for earning adventures is worn.

What do Scouts BSA do?
Scouts BSA is a program for youth ages 11 to 17 that focuses on outdoor adventure, leadership, and character development. Scouts participate in activities like camping, hiking, and community service while working together in youth-led troops to earn merit badges and achieve ranks like Eagle Scout. It's open to both young men and young women, giving them hands-on life skills, STEM learning, and outdoor survival experience.
How often does the Scout troop meet?
Scouts in troops 327 (boys) and 1327 (girls) meet every week on Tuesday evenings from 7 – 8:30pm. We also have a monthly event, such as a campout, hike, or service project. Except for couple of weeks around holidays, we meet.
How often does the troop go camping?
Our goal is to have one outing per month. As a troop, our goal is to camp at least 9 to 10 times per year. That generally includes one week-long summer camp, and 8 other weekend outings. Those may include weekend backpacking trips, day hikes, or other outdoor events.
How much does Scouts BSA cost?
The cost to join Scouts BSA is set by the National Council of Scouting America. It is currently $85 per year. Parents and Scouts pay for Camping trips and other events as they arise. They can range in price from $10 to $20 for a typical weekend event and that covers food and things such as campsite rental fees.
How much time does Scouts BSA take?
The amount of time that Scouting can take up is totally dependent on the Scout and their enthusiasm for the program. At a minimum, we’d highly encourage Scouts to be at as many weekly troop meetings as possible and to come to the weekend events. Rank advancement will naturally occur faster for those who participate in more events than their fellow Scouts. Like anything in life, you get out of Scouting what you put into it.
Can my child play sports and still participate in Scouts?
YES! Scouting encourages becoming well-rounded young men and women. Sports and Scouting should complement each other. Both teach teamwork, time management, and leadership skills. For example, our troop has had Eagle Scouts who are 2-time state champions, all conference and all-state athletes, and many multi-sport athletes. Recently, our local high school soccer team had 5 Eagle Scout starters on its roster. The entire back line was Eagle Scouts.
How does a Scout earn Eagle Scout?
The rank of Eagle is the highest rank in Scouting BSA. To earn the rank of Eagle, the Scout must:
- complete the requirements for all of the ranks along the Eagle trail (Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, and Life)
- earn 21 merit badges, 11 of which are required
- complete a major service project.
- Each rank also requires an aspect of leadership that requires holding a position of responsibility within the troop.

For Parents
Do parents have to participate in Scouts?
For Cub Scouts:
In Cub Scouts, the amount of parent involvement is set by age.
For Scouts BSA:
While we are attempting to instill independence in the youth in our Scout troops, parental involvement is still vital. We always need help with having adult supervision at events, driving Scouts to campouts, guiding Scouts on merit badges, or helping conduct rank boards of review. To meet safety requirements, there must be at least two registered adult leaders 21 or older in attendance at all events. If the event involves female scouts, a registered female over 21 must also be in attendance.
How does Scouting keep kids safe?
All registered leaders must participate and be certified in the mandatory youth protection program called "Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT)". This is an annual requirement. In addition, the Guide to Safe Scouting (GTSS) and SAFE checklist are used to plan safe scouting activities.
For all Scouting activities, at least two registered leaders, 21 years old or older, must be in attendance. If a female scout is in attendance at an event, there must also be a register female leader 21 or older must also be present. No one-on-one interaction between a scout and leader is allowed.
How can parents become adult volunteers or leaders in Scouting?
To volunteer with Pack 327, Troop 327, or 1327, parents must complete a background check, take online Youth Protection Training at my.scouting.org, and submit an adult leader application. Contact our committee leaders to find a role that fits your time and talents.
